Project Strategy

A project strategy is the number one step to consider before starting any project. Strategy outlines what you would like to achieve and how you are going to achieve it.

It should start with a business plan, budget, research and identifying resources available. Break the project down into digestible chunks and write down what needs to be done.

I am a big advocate of following the Minimum Viable Product (MVP) route when developing a software product. Focus on core requirements and look for the quickest route to market. What is the minimum amount of effort required in order to build, market and sell the product. Once you have customers and a product that is selling you are in a much better position to enhance your product by adding features and functionality, plus you get invaluable feedback from your users.

An agile approach can work very well with this type of project – but the key to this will be having a clear strategy with clear goals, milestones and deliverables.

A clear development process is critical to the success of any software project. All stakeholders need a clear  understanding of the project road map and what is to be delivered at each stage in the process.

A high level overview of a project plan is as follows:

  1. Research
  2. Discovery
  3. Software Requirements Specification (SRS)
  4. Wire framing / Prototyping /UX
  5. Technical Documentation
  6. Design /UX
  7. Development
  8. Testing
  9. Deployment
  10. Support & Maintenance
  11. Marketing
